New York, New York – The Science Philanthropy Alliance (Alliance) is pleased to announce that Emily Bolton has been appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief of Staff (COS) effective March 4th. Bolton comes to the Alliance after most recently serving as Executive Vice President of the Volcker Alliance, a nonpartisan nonprofit founded by former Federal Reserve Board chairman, Paul A. Volcker, and dedicated to advancing his vision of an empowered public sector workforce. In her dual roles at the Alliance, she will be responsible for managing the overall business support functions and staff, budgeting and financial projects, governance, risk and compliance, and vendors. She will also act as a thought partner with President France Córdova and the Alliance leadership team on the organization’s business plan and key performance indicators, policy, infrastructure, and strategy.
“Emily Bolton is ideally suited for the roles of Chief Operating Officer and Chief of Staff. She brings leadership experience in organizational strategy and governance, program design, finance, operations, and management. She has gained valuable insight into the operations of nonprofits and is committed to helping the Alliance and its members succeed in advancing science through visionary philanthropy,” noted Córdova.
Prior to joining the Volcker Alliance in 2013, Bolton was the founding Director of a new national program to respond to foreclosure in low-income neighborhoods at the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), a community development financial institution that has invested over $29 billion in communities around the country. Among other roles, she also worked as a special assistant to Paul Volcker during an independent review he led of a World Bank department and for the independent committee he chaired to investigate fraud and corruption in the United Nations Oil-for-Food program.
Bolton graduated from Harvard University magna cum laude and earned her MBA from New York University.
“I am excited and honored to have the opportunity to work with France Córdova and the rest of the of the Alliance’s terrific team. I look forward to advancing the organization’s mission to increase philanthropy for basic science and support a science philanthropy community. The Alliance’s work to enable scientific discoveries has the potential to deliver outsized impact to benefit our society and improve the human condition,” stated Bolton.
