Harvard University will establish a “Fund of Funds” in support of discovery-driven research across disciplines and fields. Supporters of such research will be able to contribute directly to the Fund, and the University will facilitate a streamlined, centralized approach to directing funds toward discovery science, while maintaining the rich diversity of Harvard’s decentralized research ecosystem.
PURPOSE AND FOCUS:
Contributions to the Fund of Funds will support cross-disciplinary projects that bring diverse perspectives to bear on critical questions, as well as single-discipline projects that may not attract funding via traditional mechanisms.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE:
The Fund of Funds will consider applications from:
- Individuals in the first three years of a faculty appointment who intend to explore promising new ideas
- Established faculty members who intend to pursue an interdisciplinary line of inquiry
- Applicants to other Harvard funding sources who are “re-directed” by the Vice Provost of Research
APPLICATION AND REVIEW:
The Office of the Vice Provost for Research will administer the Fund of Funds in close collaboration with the Office for Sponsored Programs. Applications will be reviewed by the Vice Provost for Research and a faculty advisory committee of accomplished investigators with broad experience in fundamental research.
TYPE OF SUPPORT:
Early Career: awards will provide funding of up to $150,000 over 2-3 years
New Directions: awards up to $250,000 (no designated time period)
