To ensure that basic scientific inquiry is nurtured and sustained at Princeton, the university is establishing three new funds for scientific research in the life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and applied and pure mathematics. The funds are designed to support faculty at different career stages.
Scientific Innovator Fund
PURPOSE AND FOCUS:
Supports original research to explore and test unconventional ideas prior to submitting traditional grant proposals.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE:
Preference for early-career faculty.
APPLICATION AND REVIEW:
Streamlined proposal and reporting process; judged by an anonymous group of peers and external experts for overall quality and “innovativeness” of ideas as well as impact on the field. Funds administered through Dean for Research.
TYPE OF SUPPORT:
Funding 1- multiple years, no dollar amount set.
Exceptional Accomplishment Fund
PURPOSE AND FOCUS:
Provides flexible funding for exceptional scientists with established track record and a sustained focus on promising hypotheses.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE:
More senior researchers.
APPLICATION AND REVIEW:
Proposals reviewed by a committee of peers and judged on the basis of exceptional contributions to fundamental scientific understanding.
TYPE OF SUPPORT:
Flexible funding 1- multiple years.
New Scientific Talent Fund
PURPOSE AND FOCUS:
Provides startup funding for the most accomplished assistant professors in the discovery sciences to purchase sophisticated equipment or to build a new research team.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE:
Assistant professors.
APPLICATION AND REVIEW:
Grantees will be selected by a faculty committee from a cohort of new assistant professors hired each year.
TYPE OF SUPPORT:
Flexible funding for 1 to multiple years.
